Ethical Hacking / Security University Degrees UK

One of the most popular posts on my blog is the Guest post: Current Available UK Degrees by 1337speak in April last year. I have decided to update the list as to keep the information up to date.

You who know me will know that I my self am enrolled on one of these University courses. I believe that if your starting out in security and want to make a career out of it this may be the best place to start. For me the course has done wonders, not only in what I have learnt however the people I’ve met and the drive it has given me to succeed in my chosen career.

BSc Security/Ethical Hacking Degrees in the UK:
Ethical Hacking for Computer Security – Northumbria University
Ethical Hacking and Network Security – Coventry University
Ethical Hacking & Countermeasures – University of Abertay
Computer Security & Ethical Hacking – Leeds Metropolitan University
Ethical Hacking and Security Systems Design – University of Sunderland
IT Security – University of Central Lancashire
Computer Security – De Montfort University
Computer Security – Staffordshire University
IT Security – University of Wolverhampton

More courses:
UCAS G550

I have surprised myself at how many courses are actually out there! Most of the courses have started in the past 3 years and will be starting in the next 2. It looks like there will be a lot more job competition in the next 5-10 years in the security industry. That’s OK, it will keep me on my toes. It seems information security in the UK is starting to become widespread and this can only be a good thing in the long run.

The listed courses above are for BSc university degrees, there are also MSc security courses and others out there which I have not listed.

    Didn’t realise you were a student in the NE. I’ve been writing a simple web based security scanner for my third year at Durham and using DVWA to test against.

    Cheers for helping me out [indirectly]!

    I was thinking about a post grad degree in ethical hacking. You should publish MSc courses as well. Newcastle uni and sheffield uni do them as far as I no.

    I could find that the ‘Ethical Hacking & Countermeasures’ degree in Abertay University is accredited by The British Computer Society. What about the degrees by the other universities ?

    I know Northumbria is not either due to the BCS not liking the term ‘hacker/hacking’ to be in a course tittle. I suspect other courses with the term in will also not be BCS accredited, I am unsure tho.

    Thanks for the post,
    now I’m really thinking about attending a foreign university
    I have two questions for you guys:

    is there a way to mitigate the University fees? since as far as I saw it costs like 8000£ which means 1000£/month to live :(

    and where can I find some reviews from the students?

    Yeah the BCS isn’t too cool about the term hacking, however they are a little goosed as on their board is Pete Wood who runs one of the first UK pen testing companies First Base.

    Abertay got accreditation last year, but it was touch and go for a wee while.

    @admin

    The course title of Abertay University is ‘Ethical Hacking & Countermeasures’ and it is accredited by BCS. So I don’t think they have a problem with ‘Hacking’ in the title.

    @John
    Give it a go, nothing wrong with trying, I know plenty of people who got in and didn’t meet the official requirements.

    @Rahul Gohrani
    Not any that I know of. From what I have heard the C|EH is not worth the time and money anyway. Better off going for the Offensive Security certs or a CISSP.

    Excellent list and article, thanks! I’m currently applying for an Access course in computing (Being 26) with the aim to go to uni next year. I’m incredibly interested in this course at Northumbria. Is anyone able to comment on how the courses compare in quality between the uni’s? By quality I mean how long they’ve been running, tutors experience levels, course content etc.

    What’s Northumbria uni like in general? Modern? Outdated and struggling? What’s the accomodation like? The people? Safe area?

    Just came across this article, i’ve noticed the number of universities offering these courses is on the rise. I graduated from Coventry with the degree title mentioned in your post. Prior to going to Coventry I had applied to Northumbria to study BSc Ethical Hacking however in 5 months prior to the course starting they rang me and said they were going to drop the course for a year and think about changing the way it was marketed/advertised (due to the name of the course – they said). I also went to view the course up in Abertay around the same time but I chose Coventry in the end due to location. Anyway nice to see there are other highly motivated people on these courses :-)

    Im considering moving to the UK to study ethical hacking since US doesn’t have a single university with the program and was just curious on which universities might be best for me, an american student with a 2year assoc. degree in Security and Information Assurance. Any help would be great, thanks!

    @Paul
    Too many questions to answer in a blog response, sorry.

    @Cam
    Are you sure there are none in the US? That surprises me, but I don’t know if there are or aren’t any. I really don’t know which university or course is best in the UK, I can only speak for one of them.

    Yes, I am very sure that there are no ethical hacking degrees in US. I’ve been searching for weeks now. Sure, I can get a certification in ethical hacking in a 5-day course after i have a degree. But I want a specialized degree in ethical hacking. There are non here. Now I just have to convince my girlfriend to drop everything and move to a different country with me.

    It may seem dumb, but I was really just wondering about if any of the schools were in areas that might not like American students. It sucks but I know everywhere has areas that aren’t as open as they ought to be, and I don’t want to impose.

    Thank you for replying.

    @Cam
    I wouldn’t have thought there were any areas that had a particular dislike to American citizens. Like every where there are a minority of idiots which may pass a comment. But I’m sure those same people would find something to comment about with anybody.

    If you are on Twitter, send a tweet out asking if there are any degrees in the US, include me your tweet, I will retweet your tweet and hopefully get you an answer. :)

    I am having trouble deciding between albertay and northumbria. does anyone have any information that would help decide? the information on albertay’s website seems to be alot more detailed plus it is accredited by the BCS.

    Why don’t you go visit both of them and see for yourself? If you apply to Abertay then you will get an invite. I am sure Northumbria would be happy to show you around as well..(I am the programme tutor for Abertay BTW).
