Guest post: Current Available UK Degrees
Within the UK there is, that I have been able to find only three universities offering a variation of Ethical Hacking Degrees;
> Ethical Hacking for Computer Security – Northumbria University
> Ethical Hacking and Network Security – Coventry University
> Ethical Hacking and Countermeasures – University of Abertay Dundee
When the course at Northumbria was in the development stages there was even media attention drawn to it, as the name before it’s change was simply “Ethical Hacking” although I could not fins the story surrounding it’s name here is a link to a story on the subject itself. Funnily enough there is also a blog post on it although not many replies it shows how much attention the thought of people learning to hack has brought about. Blog Post.
‘
Regardless of the attention that the subject receives there is still a great demand for security professionals within many industries, I was at a Business risk management conference, at the end of this month and as was quite surprised at the lack of knowledge business people had in regards to what data could be found on the internet, and how insecure any server can be if not maintained and configured correctly. Ethical Hackers are needed not only to Information Gather–>Carry out vulnerability tests–>and Penetration testing but also to educate people and companies. The degrees provided in the UK are a great way for Ethical Hackers to start off and be recognised to have the knowledge to do this, along with other certifications available.
I hope this information is useful to people looking into university courses at the moment, please feel free to ask any questions regarding the Northumbria course as I am currently on it .

It also looks like Leeds Met is going to be offering an Ethical Hacking degree called “BSc(Hons) Computer Security & Ethical Hacking”.

Browsing the net looking at them I decided to check out Northumbria and Coventry, I’m going to the open day at Nothumbria on Wednesday and went to the coventry one yesterday!
Whilst I can’t (yet) comment on how the northumbria one will look at the open day the information online makes be prefere northumbria…that being said the open day at coventry gave me a lot of the detailed information I was looking for (spoke to the course tutor) and from what I’ve seen from the uni in Coventry they are much more organised than Northumbria!
However if on the upcomming open day Northumbria can live up to how it’s looking online I’m in for a very tough decision! I’d highly reccomend looking seriously at coventry though, they do seem to know what they’re doing too…
I’ll post an update once I’ve been to the Northumbria open day too!

I’m back! Just in from the northumbria open day…well it was good! I still feel coventry is more organised and has several advantages in terms of location etc, however the course at northumbria seems much more in depth with specialisation from the start. Speaking to the head of the programme for this one I got a good idea of the course and the strong feeling that he really knows his stuff and is very capable of putting it across and training to a high level, so it has lived upto its appearences :D I also got to check out the union and a couple of local bars and alls good there too, everyone is very friendly up north it seems! Overall I think I prefere northumbria, althougth prehaps the uni as a whole seems better in coventry (it is very close though) I do think i’ll enjoy northumria and am very confident aboout the course.
